AI Skills Discovery Research Project

AI Skills Discovery Research Project

“Our institution needs to produce skills accreditation but we are short on resources to do the foundation work on implementing this strategy; how can we use digital technology to efficiently and effectively identify and recognise those skills already embedded in the institution’s learning data?”

Recognising skills embedded in learning data is a complex task, with large amounts of data and many variables involved. It’s a problem traditionally requiring the use of human thinking processes to solve as it is too complex for handwritten rules. Artificial intelligence, with its ability to simulate components of human intelligence processes, is the most effective solution to employ.

This research project seeks to create an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system that can analyse large amounts of curriculum data and identify skills embedded in the curriculum.

In collaboration with AI specialists and utilising the rich skill descriptors (RSD) data schema, the initial focus of the project will be to map the Australian Skills Classification (ASC v3.0) to the RSD schema to import into the openRSD library.

International Council on Badges and Credentials (ICoBC)

The International Council on Badges and Credentials (ICoBC) is a network of educational, corporate, association and governmental organisations. Their goal is to develop and facilitate best practices on badges and credentials regionally and globally. The ICoBC community is collaborating around the following areas:

  • Designing badges and credentials (Curriculum, testing, verification)
  • Rolling out badges and credentials (Internal marketing, practices)
  • Technical standards on interoperability between systems (LMS, TMS, external platforms)
  • Taxonomies and crosswalks to official certification schemes

OSN Community of Practice

The Open Skills Network (OSN) has been a nexus of ideating, researching, and discussing the future of open skills and competencies for learners and workers around the globe. Through pilots, workgroups, summits and more, the efforts of OSN and its members have accumulated into something truly impressive within the education and employment space.

The OSN Community of Practice (CoP) is focused on sharing strategies for implementing open skills and creating a shared space for working on new projects and ideas. At the heart of the OSN CoP is a core stack of tools and playbooks that are action-oriented and built to catalyse active participation in an open, inclusive network of mission aligned people and organisations.

Queensland Cross Sector Microcredential Working Group

Since 2019, the Queensland Cross Sector Microcredential Working Group, a group of K12, tertiary and public/private sector educators, have met in a community of practice. The goal of their work is to enable developmental conversations across the range of challenges and opportunities with which we are all grappling, to better understand and make sense of the ways in which microcredentials (and badges) might positively impact our educational contexts. More importantly, we are considering how microcredentials might be used to enhance and improve the learner journey across all sectors of the educational continuum for lifelong learning into industry and workplaces.

The group has established a number of cross sector projects that have shown great promise – such as one in which they have mapped a single “skill”, digital literacy, from K12 through to tertiary, with an understanding of the value proposition for industry.

Research Whitepaper: Digital Micro-Credential Efficacy and Impact on Learner Confidence

This research study was conducted in 2022 over a six-month period, in collaboration with a group of international cross-sector partners, as part of a Global Victoria EdTech Innovation Alliance initiative. The project aimed to address the increasing need for education institutions to provide appropriate tools and resources for learners to bridge the learner-to-earner gap and meet the needs of industry for job-ready graduates. The project engaged two higher education institutions (the University of Melbourne and University of Dayton) and their learners, as well as employers, and an education nonprofit organisation in the skills ecosystem (Education Design Lab) to explore their respective lenses of perception around personal evidence of skills and the best way to communicate this to future employers. Edalex’s project investigated the efficacy of the personalised Personal Evidence Records, produced by their Credentialate platform, with the ultimate aim of improving employability outcomes for learners and helping address a talent shortage for employers.

The research project provided the opportunity to share knowledge and practice across providers and EdTech organisations and generate new ways of working in the emerging areas of micro-credential and skills ecosystems. The insights from the research has informed future policy and practice around skill transparency and personal evidence of learning, and their benefits to participants in the digital credentialing and skills ecosystems as well as the learner/earner ecosystem.

Skills Meet-Up Discussion Paper: Towards A Roadmap For The Emerging Skills Ecosystem In Australia

Skills Meet-Ups were designed to create an avenue for conversation at the grassroots through to policy making level. Stakeholders identified the need to share their practical experiences, seek answers from like-minded colleagues and explore the wicked problems around the skills gap and the future of work with those invested in forging change.

A common theme across the events was the need for action and coordination. It was recognised that there are many disruptive and worthwhile projects currently working to effect change, particularly in the area of training, reskilling and up-skilling. These efforts need to be identified, recorded and the results amplified.
